What makes a good couples therapist?
Couples therapy is a different skill from individual therapy. A therapist who is excellent one-to-one may still struggle to hold two people in the room without taking sides. Whichever clinic you choose, check these four things.
Specific couples training. Ask which couples approach they use. The Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) are the two best-researched. Training levels matter: Gottman training runs from Level 1 to Level 3, with Level 3 the most advanced.
Experience with your issue. Recurring arguments, an affair, a sexless marriage, in-law conflict, a decision about whether to stay together: ask whether the therapist works with your situation regularly.
Fit for both partners. Both of you need to feel the therapist is fair. If one of you is more comfortable in Mandarin, French or Hindi, or you come from different cultures or faiths, a therapist who shares that context can make a real difference.
A clear structure. A good couples therapist will assess your relationship in the first sessions, explain what they see, and agree goals with you both. If after three or four sessions there is no plan, ask for one.

How much does couples therapy cost in Singapore?
Couples therapy at Psychology Blossom ranges from S$140 to S$350 for a 50-minute session, and from S$210 to S$525 for an 80-minute session, depending on the therapist. We do not charge GST. Many couples choose 80-minute sessions because there is time for both partners to be heard and for the work to go somewhere.
Most couples come weekly or fortnightly to begin with. For more on what to expect, see our guide to starting couples therapy and our couples therapy and marriage counselling pages.
How did we put this list together?
We included every therapist at Psychology Blossom who lists couples work as part of their practice and offers couples sessions. We grouped them by situation, language and budget instead of ranking them, because the best couples therapist for one couple is rarely the best for another. Fees and availability are as listed on our team page in October 2026 and may change.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Gottman Method?
The Gottman Method is a couples therapy approach developed by Drs John and Julie Gottman from decades of research on what makes relationships succeed or fail. It focuses on managing conflict, building friendship and creating shared meaning. Read more in our Gottman Method guide.
What if my partner does not want to come?
It is common for one partner to be more hesitant. Many therapists will see one partner first, and some couples start with a free 15-minute consultation so the hesitant partner can meet the therapist before committing.
Can we do couples therapy online?
Yes. Online couples therapy works well and is a good option if you have demanding schedules. Our therapists also work with couples where partners live in different countries.
Is couples therapy only for couples in crisis?
No. Many couples come to improve communication, prepare for a big change like a baby or a move, or before marriage. See our premarital counselling page if you are planning to marry.
Can couples therapy be done in Mandarin?
Yes. Su Hwei Tee, Joey Wang, Dr Anthony Wong and Catherine Chan all work with couples in Mandarin. See our list of Mandarin-speaking therapists.
How many sessions does couples therapy take?
It varies with the issue. Many couples notice real change within 8 to 12 sessions, while deeper issues such as recovery from an affair usually take longer. Your therapist should review progress with you regularly.
