Why does it matter to see a therapist in Mandarin?
For some people, certain thoughts, feelings and experiences are easier to express in Mandarin, even if they are equally comfortable speaking English. This may be particularly true when discussing emotionally significant experiences, such as family relationships, childhood memories or personal struggles. Being able to express oneself in a preferred language can foster a greater sense of comfort, ease and connection in therapy.
Speaking Mandarin may also make it easier to explore culturally relevant experiences, including filial piety, face (面子), intergenerational expectations and family relationships. However, each person's relationship with language and culture is unique, and therapy provides a space to explore these experiences without assumptions. For more on this, see our page on therapy in Mandarin.
What should I look for in a Mandarin-speaking therapist?
Language proficiency and flexibility. Some therapists conduct sessions predominantly in Mandarin, while others are comfortable working in both Mandarin and English. Consider whether you would prefer therapy entirely in Mandarin or are comfortable switching between the two languages. You can clarify this with your therapist before booking.
Comfort with code-switching. Most bilingual clients move between Mandarin and English within one sentence. A good therapist follows you rather than asking you to pick one.
Fees and level of experience. Fees vary with experience. Counsellors in training see clients at a lower fee under clinical supervision, which can be a good way to start.

How much does therapy in Mandarin cost?
Therapy in Mandarin costs the same as therapy in English at Psychology Blossom. Fees range from S$50 per 50-minute session with a counsellor in training to S$260 with Dr Anthony Wong, and there is no GST. For the full fee picture, see our therapy cost guide.
How did we put this list together?
We included every clinician at Psychology Blossom who lists Mandarin as a language they offer therapy in. We grouped them by specialty and need instead of ranking them, because the right therapist depends on what you are working on as much as on language. Fees and availability are as listed on our team page in October 2026 and may change.
