Frequently Asked Questions about Couples Therapy
Couples therapy seeks to provide a safe and structured environment for couples to develop a deeper understanding of each other, improve communication, and resolve conflicts. Expect collaborative discussions and guidance from a trained therapist to enhance your relationship and address underlying issues.
What sets us apart in couples therapy is our unwavering dedication to clients, a client-centric approach emphasising empathy, a commitment to fair and respectful treatment, close collaboration to build trust, and a focus on empowering couples with the skills to navigate relationship challenges effectively.
Couples facing poor communication, frequent conflict and arguments, couples who have grown emotionally distant and are on the verge of parting ways, or specific problems such as infidelity, money, sexual difficulties, and parenting. Couples therapy can benefit even couples with "normal" levels of conflict.
Expect your first couple of sessions to begin with an in-depth assessment. For us to adequately provide customised interventions, we need to know your relationship!
Sessions are usually 80 mins or 110 mins. Couples who are unable to commit to frequent sessions may benefit from marathon sessions, where we have multiple sessions back-to-back for 1 to 2 days.
There is no particular length of therapy. Most clients see definite improvement in their relationships by six sessions, but what might work best for your relationship can be discussed with your therapist.
The objective of the therapy is to reduce instances of difficult conflict and disharmony. I collaborate with you to nurture a relationship characterised by feelings of safety, security, and affection.
Upon completing the therapy, we aim for you to experience a sense of safety, closeness, and strong support from your spouse or partner. Your relationship will ideally serve as a comforting and reliable source of support. In the event of conflicts, they should resolve relatively quickly, and fights should become less frequent.
We work very closely with our clients and respond to feedback. We want you to be satisfied with the work and the progress you are making. If you find that a particular therapist does not suit your needs, it is okay to speak with your therapist about finding someone more suitable.
Relationships may experience crises, but therapy can also be beneficial when frequent arguments over minor issues or communication difficulties arise. Any instance where your relationship lacks a nurturing, supportive, or satisfying quality is an opportune time to consider seeking therapy.
It's important to note that not all couples therapies or therapists are the same. If previous therapy experiences have not yielded positive results, it does not necessarily mean we cannot help you. The Gottman Method is a highly effective method supported by research, providing a structured path to help you reestablish a deeper connection in your relationship.
In our role as your couples therapist, it is crucial for us to remain impartial and not favour one side over the other. In couples counselling, the client is the relationship between the both of you. Both you and your partner should experience a sense of safety and support while working with me.
Ideally, for couples therapy to be most effective, it's beneficial for both individuals to participate in every session. However, individual therapy can also play a valuable role in enhancing and fortifying relationships. Feel free to reach out, and we can help you develop a tailored therapy strategy that best suits your specific needs.
In addition to the requirement of advanced degrees, couples therapists need additional training to work with couples, which can result in higher fees to cover their expertise. The therapist's time, expertise, and the costs of maintaining a private practice or working in a clinic contribute to the overall expense. Ultimately, it can be a wiser choice to work with a specialist who may charge more but deliver effective outcomes. Your relationship deserves this commitment.
We often address concerns related to infidelity in our practice. Whether trust issues have arisen or if there have been instances of physical or emotional affairs, it's important to emphasise that seeking therapy is a worthwhile step. It is never too late to seek therapy.
