Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD): Understanding the Challenges and Paths to Support

Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that interfere with one’s ability to listen, think, speak, write, spell, or perform mathematical calculations. Individuals with SLD may struggle with reading (Dyslexia), writing (Dysgraphia), or mathematics (Dyscalculia). These conditions are not a reflection of intelligence, but rather differences in how the brain processes information. With appropriate intervention and support, individuals with SLD can thrive academically and personally.

Symptoms of an SLD

The diagnosis of SLD requires the presence of at least one of the following symptoms that persist for at least six months, despite targeted interventions:

✽ Inaccurate or slow and effortful word reading

Individuals may read single words aloud incorrectly, slowly, and hesitantly. They may frequently guess words and struggle to sound them out.

✽ Difficulty understanding the meaning of what is read

Even when reading accurately, comprehension may be impaired. Students may struggle with sequencing, relationships between ideas, inferences, or deeper meanings in text.

✽ Difficulties with spelling

Spelling challenges often involve adding, omitting, or substituting vowels or consonants, leading to inconsistent writing.

✽ Difficulties with written expression

Writing may include grammatical or punctuation errors, poor paragraph organization, or unclear expression of ideas. Despite strong oral abilities, transferring ideas into writing can be very difficult.

✽ Difficulties mastering number sense, number facts, or calculation

Struggles may include poor understanding of numbers, magnitude, or relationships. Individuals may count on their fingers to solve basic arithmetic instead of recalling math facts and may become easily lost during calculations.

✽ Difficulties with mathematical reasoning

Challenges in applying mathematical concepts, facts, or procedures to solve quantitative problems are common, leading to frustration in problem-solving situations.

As academic demands increase, these signs and symptoms often become more obvious, particularly in structured educational settings.

Severity of SLDs

  • Mild: Some difficulties in one or two academic areas, but students may compensate with extra effort or strategies.
  • Moderate: Significant challenges that require specialized teaching and accommodations to meet academic expectations.
  • Severe: Difficulties that affect multiple areas of learning, requiring ongoing intensive intervention and specialized instruction.

Treatment and Support for SLDs

There is currently no “cure” for SLDs. However, timely intervention and structured support can enable individuals to cope with symptoms and develop skills to succeed. Interventions focus on harnessing strengths while addressing specific difficulties.

✽ Individualised Education Programmes (IEP)

These programmes focus on developing tailored learning strategies that leverage a student’s strengths while addressing weaknesses. Examples include using repetition and mnemonic devices to help with memorization, or drawing visual aids to illustrate mathematical problems. Individualised support ensures that learning is accessible and less overwhelming.

✽ Special Education (SPED) Schools

In Singapore, students diagnosed with SLD may attend Special Education schools, which provide targeted support through specialized curricula and trained staff. Examples of such schools include:

  • Pathlight
  • Eden School
  • AWWA
  • Rainbow Centre
  • Metta School

✽ Learning Support Programmes

In mainstream schools, Learning Support Programmes provide smaller class sizes and tailored teaching for students with SLDs. These programmes adapt instructional methods to help students grasp core concepts more effectively. For example, students diagnosed with dyslexia may undergo a two-year remediation programme aimed at improving reading fluency and comprehension.

✽ Psychotherapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help address emotional and behavioural challenges often associated with SLDs. Children may experience frustration, anxiety, or depression due to persistent academic struggles. Therapy provides strategies to manage stress, build resilience, and improve self-esteem.

Living with an SLD

SLDs often extend beyond academics, impacting self-esteem, social interactions, and career choices. Children may compare themselves negatively to peers, while adults may avoid tasks involving reading, writing, or math. Supportive environments at home, school, and work are crucial. When teachers, parents, and employers adopt inclusive strategies, individuals with SLDs can focus on their strengths and contribute meaningfully.

Some practical strategies include:

  • Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
  • Using assistive technology, such as text-to-speech or audiobooks.
  • Providing extra time during tests and assignments.
  • Encouraging multisensory learning (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods).
  • Promoting growth mindset by focusing on effort rather than outcomes.

Conclusion

Specific Learning Disabilities present challenges, but they do not define a person’s potential. With timely diagnosis, tailored interventions, and strong support systems, individuals with SLDs can achieve success in academics, careers, and personal lives. Early recognition and compassion are key in empowering those with SLDs to thrive.
