What makes a good trauma therapist?
Trauma therapy done well can change how a memory feels in the body, processing it appropriately and allowing the brain to heal. When choosing a trauma therapist, we encourage you to keep these four things in mind:
- Training in an evidence-based trauma approach. The World Health Organization recommends trauma-focused CBT and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) for post-traumatic stress. Ask your therapist which approach they use and where they trained in it.
- Experience with your kind of trauma. A single event, such as an accident or assault, is often treated differently from long-term childhood trauma or an abusive relationship. Complex trauma usually needs a longer, more gradual approach.
- Safety first. A good trauma therapist will not rush you into talking about the worst moments. The early sessions should build stability and coping skills before any processing begins. This is all part of trauma therapy.
- A therapist you can trust. With trauma more than any other issue, the relationship is part of the treatment. If you do not feel safe with a therapist after two or three sessions, it is reasonable to ask to see someone else.

How much does trauma therapy cost in Singapore?
Trauma therapy at Psychology Blossom ranges from S$120 to S$360 per 50-minute session, depending on the clinician. We do not charge GST. Our Senior Clinical Psychologists charge from S$248 to S$360.
The number of sessions depends on the trauma. A single-incident trauma may respond in a relatively short course of EMDR, while complex or childhood trauma usually needs a longer course. Your therapist should give you a rough plan after the first few sessions. Read more in our trauma therapy guide and our EMDR guide.
How did we put this list together?
We included clinicians at Psychology Blossom who list trauma as a specialisation and have specific trauma training or a trauma-focused approach. We grouped them by approach, language and need instead of ranking them, because the right trauma therapist depends heavily on the kind of trauma and on whom you feel safe with. Fees and availability are as listed on our team page in October 2026 and may change.
Frequently asked questions
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories so they feel less overwhelming. It is recommended by the World Health Organization for post-traumatic stress. Read our full EMDR guide.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
Not necessarily, and not straight away. EMDR in particular does not require you to describe every detail aloud. An effective therapist will go at your pace and focus on safety first.
Can trauma therapy be done online?
Yes. Many forms of trauma therapy work well online, including talk-based approaches and some EMDR. Ask your therapist whether online sessions suit your situation. See online therapy.
What is the difference between EMDR and Attachment-Focused EMDR?
Attachment-Focused EMDR uses the same core method but puts extra emphasis on building safety and repairing attachment wounds, which may suit people with childhood or relational trauma.
How do I know if I need trauma therapy?
If a past experience still causes flashbacks (large or small), nightmares, strong reactions to reminders, numbness, or patterns in relationships you cannot seem to change, trauma therapy may help. A free 15-minute consultation is a low-pressure way to talk it through.
What if I am in crisis right now?
If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, call 995 or go to the nearest emergency department. You can also call the National Mindline at 1771, or the Samaritans of Singapore at 1767, at any time.
